Alternators and starter motors can be an expensive item to fix, although buying a new one is the most common option (if available), we still repair units 'in house' where viable - a lost skill in many garages, which can work out to be cheaper option
The first step is always to confirm that a unit is faulty, so it is powered on a test bench.
if required the unit is then disassembled and it's components are examined and checked.
During the repair stage (unless otherwise required) the casing is cleaned back to new and faulty parts replaced with new.
The unit is reassembled, and tested again to confirm that it is functioning correctly.
When repairing is not viable either due to parts availability or simply its just too expensive, supplying a new one may be the only solution.
With larger, more powerful starter motors and alternators the factory reconditioned units offer another option between repair and new.
At first glance, it looks ready for the scrap pile.
But, a closer look reveals an item worthy of repair, and at a price cheaper than a new replacement.
Once stipped and cleaned up, the worn parts are replaced, reassembled and tested.
Ready to return to the veichlce for years more work.
